Sodas Maine to Manville

Maine Bottling Co.-
The Maine Bottling Co. was in Providence. It was not listed in 1920, but in 1921-23 it was at 55 Hope St. In 1921-27 Angello Alvernaz was the proprietor. In 1925 it was at 117 Gano St. It was owned by Turbitt & Co. at the time. That same year an ad stated it was manufacturing “Hope Club Beverages”. It was the Maine Bottling Co. Inc. in 1926. It was at 115-117 Gano St. in 1924-27. It was not listed in 1928. It was at 73 Hope St. in 1929-1930. Emanuel Tsagarakis was the owner in 1929. Julius Moskol was the owner in 1930. Another listing has Melvin Moskol as the owner in 1930-31. In 1931 it was at 18 Laura St. in East Providence. Milton M. Moskol was the proprietor at this location. In 1931 Julius and Melvin opened the Washington Bottling Co. (formerly in New Bedford, Mass) at 364 Washington St. By 1936 it was the Colonial Bottling Co.

The Maine Spring Water Co. was in Providence. It succeeded T.E. Hickey & Co. It was a 6 Planet St. in 1901-02. Ransford H. Harvey was the owner in 1901-02. They were bottling Mount Oxford Spring Water, and mineral waters in siphons. They were not listed in 1903.

The Manhattan Club Beverage Co. was located in Esmond, RI. It was formerly the Esmond Bottling Works, which was last listed in 1944. It moved to Woonsocket in the 1950s (possibly 1954). They were in business into the 1970s.

Hugh H. Manning (1858-1919) was a liquor dealer in Providence. Michael F. Manning, his brother, was first listed as a liquor dealer in 1884-86 at 95 Eddy St. He was listed as a clerk in 1887. In 1888-1891 Hugh was running a saloon with his brother, Michael F. at 71 Eddy St. They were known as the Manning Bros. at the time. Hugh was alone at 71 Eddy St. in 1893-95. He was at 71-73 Eddy St. in 1895. In 1896 he was listed as a bottler at rear 569 Atwells Ave. He was not listed under liquors or any other occupation in 1897. In the 1898-99 he was the proprietor of Hotel Vendrome at 102-104 Pine St. Hugh moved to Memphis, Tenn. in 1900. Michael F. was still dealing in liquors at 725 Westminster St. in 1916.

The Manville Bottling Co. was located in Manville, RI. It was first listed in 1911, and dealt in liquors. It was on Spring St. in 1911. Morris Blackman (1889-1981?) and David S. Kniznik (1888-1943) were the owners. In 1913 Morris (or Maurice) Blackman of the Manville Bottling Co. filed for bankrupcy. They were at 2 Spring St. in 1913. They were listed as bottlers in 1914. The company was not listed in 1915 or 1917. It was at 111 Daniels St. from 1920-22.

The Lymansville Bottling Co. was in Lymansville, RI. This is a village in North Providence. The unrelated Lymansville Mineral Water Co. was listed in 1897-98. The Bottling Co. was first listed in 1913. It was at 271 Woonasquatucket Ave. N. Prov. from 1913-1924. Raffaello Ibello (1877-1923) was the proprietor. They were bottling strawberry soda in 1922.

Patrick E. Lynch-
Patrick Lynch was a bottler and liquor dealer in Nasonville, RI. He also ran the Western Hotel (1882). He was listed in Mohegan in 1887. He was at Main St. and Pascoag Rd. in Nasonville in 1892-94. He was first listed as a bottler in Nasonville in 1893. He was the proprietor of the Western Hotel at the time, and was advertising liquors, sarsaparilla, soda, and ginger ale. McManus & Meade appear to have succeeded him in 1896.

John J. Maguire-
John J. Maguire (1850-1925) was a liquor dealer in Providence. He started working with his brother Michael as the Maguire Bros. In 1876 they were at 3 Bergen St. They were at 82 Brook St. from 1880-86. In 1889 they were at 32 Brook St. John left the Maguire Brothers in 1891 and moved to his own location. He was at 190, 192 Wickenden St. in 1892. He was at 120 Wickenden St. in 1893. He was also listed in East Providence that year. He was at 188-192 Wickenden in 1894-95. A Providence directory has him at 232 Wickenden St. and 560 So. Main St. in 1895-96. He was a wholesale liquor dealer at the time. He was at 232-236 Wickenden St. from 1896-98. He was at 234-236 Wickenden St. in 1897. In 1898-1900 he was at 236 Wickenden St. and 125 Dyer Ave. The Dyer Ave. address was his wholesale location. He had a number of branch locations, many which were likely saloons in the 1890s. He was at 236 Wickenden St. in 1901-1916. He was also at 527 Eddy St. in 1905. It was & Co. in 1898. He was at 234 Wickenden St. in 1920.

Sodas Levin to Lobello

Simon Levin & Sons/ Levin Bros.-
In 1889-1891 Simon Levin (d. 1914) was listed as a peddler. In 1893 he was bottling soda with his brother Julius M. at 1 & 3 Ambrose St. In 1893 they were known as S. Levin & Son. In 1894 Simon’s son Ben joined the company, and it became S. Levin & Sons. They were at 208 Chalkstone Ave. from 1894-1900. In 1895 the company became S. Levin & Sons Co. In 1900 it was called Simon Levin & Sons Co. Inc. Morris J. Levin (1858-1920,1) joined the company this year. Oddly, an ad from 1897 does not include the Co. part. Simon left the company in 1901, and was listed as a grocer. The company became Levin Bros. They were at 208 Chalkstone Ave. from 1901-1905. In 1906-1911 they were bottling soda at 208 Chalkstone Ave. and dealing in liquors at 150 Charles St. In 1912 they were at 208 Chalkstone St. and 173 Charles St. In 1913 Morris J. was dealing in fruit and the other brothers had no occupation. In 1914 Morris started the Quaker Club Co. He ran it until he died in 1921. His son(?) Louis took it over.
Julius M. Levin, Morris J. Levin, and Ben Levin. Morris died in June 1921. Julius was listed alone as a bottler in 1917.
They became the Quaker Club Co. in 1913.

The Liberty Club Beverages brand was sold by the Supreme Mineral Water Co. In 1936 the Supreme Mineral Water Co. was at 8-14 W. River St. The Liberty Club Bottling Co. was listed separately in 1939-1940 at 69 Bath St. Samuel Labush was the owner in 1939-1945. Benjamin Cohen had joined Samuel by 1950. In 1942-1955 the Supreme Mineral Water Co. was listed at the same address. The Liberty Club Beverage Co. had 18 employees in 1945. In 1954-55 the Berry Spring Bottling Co. was also at this location. All three companies were not listed in 1956. John C. Tsagardkis and Constantine Tsagardkis were the owners in 1960 at 115 Gano St.

Life Saver Beverages-
The Life Saver Beverage Co. were located in Centredale, RI.  I believe it was Harry Sharp's original name for Yacht Club Beverages.  He was also the commander of the Greystone Life Saving Crew, which appears to be the inspiration for the name.

John Lifschitz was a bottler in Providence. He was listed as a peddler in 1901. He was a grocer at 247 Willard Ave. 1902-09. He had no occupation in 1910. In 1911 Jonas and Charles Lipschitz were bottlers at rear 210 Willard Ave. in 1911. He was at 210 Willard Ave. in 1912. He was listed as Jonas, and changed his name to John in 1913. In 1912-16 he was at rear 12 Hilton St. In 1916-18 John & Charles were at 218 Willard Ave. The company was now John Lifschitz & Son (Charles?). He was at 218 Willard Ave. in 1920. This was his residence at the time, he had no occupation listed.

He was at 828 Charles St. In 1926-1941 the company was at 828 Charles St. Antonio Lobello was the owner in 1936. It was oddly called the Spring Water & Soda Co. in 1939-1940. It was back to the Lobello Spring Water & Soda Co. in 1942-1960. In 1961-62 the Frisky Bottling Co., D-Lish Bottling Co., and Wellington Club Beverage Co. were all at this location. The companies name changed to Lobello Spring Water Beverage Co. Inc. In 1963 the Berry Spring Bottling Co. and Liberty Club Bottling Co. were also at this location. All 6 companies were at this location from 1963-64.

In 1888 he was a clerk at 32 Fountain St. In 1889-91 he was running a saloon at 40 Fountain St. From 1892-1916 (prob. later) he was also in Pawtucket. He was at 40-44 Fountain St. from 1892-1896. He was at 66 Fountain St. and 128 Plain St. in 1895. He was at 66-72 Fountain St. in 1897. The address changed to 60, 62 Fountain St. in 1898. James Lavell & Son were bottlers at 147 Pine St. in 1899. He was at 22 and 66 Fountain St. and 311 Eddy St. in 1900. He was at 24-28 Fountain St. in 1901. At this time his son had joined the company. They were at 24 and 66 Fountain St., 311 Eddy, 345 Canal St., and 81 Delaine in 1902. James Sr. moved to Chicago in 1902. They were not at the Eddy St. and Delaine St. addresses in 1903. James Lavell Jr. (1872-1939) was at 24 Fountain St. in 1904-1914. He was at 28 Fountain St. in 1915-19. Lavell & Son were at 28 Fountain St. in 1920.

James F. Lawton (1847-1932) was a bottler in Westerly. He was listed from 1889-1907. He was on Potter Hill Rd. in 1904. They were advertising soda water and cider. In 1908 James and Ralph W. Lawton (1877-1933) were listed as bottlers. They were not listed in 1909, but they were listed again in 1910-11. Lawton’s Bottling Works was listed from 1911-1920. They were listed as bottling sodas in 1914. It was located in Varietyville in 1916-18. This was a small village just north of Westerly. In 1912-1921 it was located on Potter Hill Rd.

Lee Mineral Water Co.-
The Lee Mineral Water Co. was established in 1887. It was located in Lymansville, RI. Arthur A. Lee (1854-1894) was the proprietor. He was listed as a bottler in Centredale in 1883-89. In 1894 they manufactured 8 different drinks, and produced $500 worth of product per month. That year they stated they have been running half time, and that competition had increased in the last four years. The company had 10 employees. While the business was established in 1887, it was first known as A.A. Lee, then the Centredale Mineral Water Co. from 1890-91. It officially became the Lee Mineral Water Co. in 1892. It was listed in 1895-97 only under mineral waters. In 1897 the Lymansville Mineral Water Co. was listed.

George was listed as a driver from 1899-1903. He was the proprietor of the Rochester Hotel at 138 Pine St. in 1904-1918. In 1919-1920 he lived at 118 Pocasset Ave. with no occupation listed. No liquors in 1913.

LaSalle Beverages was a brand started by the Shiloh Bottling Works. This was before 1928. The earliest ad I found was from 1929. Later on the company also had a location in Springfield, Mass. It was at 166 Lester St. in 1932. The Shiloh Bottling Co. was also at this address in 1932. LaSalle Ginger Ale.

James Keron-
James Keron (1841-1904) was a bottler in Central Falls. He was a liquor dealer in 1881. He was first listed as a bottler in 1884. He was at 340 Mill St. in 1884-87. He was at 300 Mill St. in 1886-1890. He was the proprietor of the Central Falls Bottling Co. in 1894. He was at 454 Mill St. in 1894-1902. He died in January 1904. A William A. Keron was listed as a bottler in 1906. He was at 15 North St. in 1920. He sold a drink called “Herbola”.

Christian Kiess (d. 1897) was a liquor dealer in Providence. He was at 44 Peck St. from 1876-1880. The Kiess Bros. (Christian and Frederick) were listed as bottlers at 44 Peck St. in 1877-78. In 1875 Frederick was listed as a tailor. In 1878 the Kiess Bros. ran a lager beer bottling establishment. They were at 44 Peck St. and 145 Dyer St. In 1879-1880 they were listed as bottlers at 44 Peck St. and 145 Dyer St. In 1880 Henry M. and Lewis J. Haar (known as Haar & Co.) succeeded the Kiess Bros. They were listed as lager beer bottlers at 44 Peck St. Frederick was a lager beer bottler at 58 Pine St. in 1881. A George Kiess was listed as a bottler at 58 Pine St. in 1887-88. George moved to Germany in 1889. In 1889 Christian Kiess was living at 201 Pavilion Ave. That same year Frederick Kiess was running a saloon at Pine cor. Peck St. Frederick died in Dec. 1889. Also from 1886-1889 Fritz Kiess was the proprietor of the Rhode Island House at 58 Pine St. Christian Kiess was listed as a bottler at 47 Peck St. in 1890. Christian Kiess & Co. was at 75, 79 Dorrance St. in 1891-92. He was dealing in ales, wines, and lager at the time. He died July 1897.

Kings Bottling Works-
Grover C. King (1888-1959) was a bottler in Westerly, RI. The King Bottling Co. was first listed in 1917 on Main St. He was at 184 Main St. from 1918-19. He was at rear 138 W. Broad St. in 1920. He was at rear Crandall Block on Canal St. in 1922-24. In 1925-1941 the company was at rear 22 Canal St. He also ran King’s White Rock Bottling Works. A 1927 listing says “formerly White Rock Bottling Works”. One listing has it at W. Broad St. in 1927. The plant was at rear 22 Canal St. in 1930, and his residence at 36 West Broad St. In 1934 they were bottling NuGrape, NuIcy, and Brandymist. They were just bottling NuGrape and NuIcy in 1935-1940. The company was not listed in 1942, but Grover was listed as dealing in soft drinks until 1943.

Bartholomew Keily was a brewer in Providence. Bartholomew and his brother Owen were first listed as bottlers at Cedar & Barney Sts. in 1870. In 1871 Owen partnered with Eugene Sullivan for form Keily & Sullivan, bottlers at the same address from 1871-72. Owen was listed alone as a bottler in 1873. Bartholomew took over the establishment of P. Corbett in 1872. That year he was advertising soda, sarsaparilla, white & root beer. He was in the rear of the old brewery, cor. Richmond & Pine Sts. in 1872-78. Another address was rear 154 Pine St. in 1872-74. He was alone at Cedar cor. Barney St. from 1875-76. He was dealing in liquors with his brother Owen as well as Eugene Sullivan at Pine cor. Peck St. in 1877. The Keily Bros. were at cor. Cedar & Barney Sts., northwest cor. of Pine & Peck Sts. in 1880. They were at 51 Pine St. cor. Peck St. in 1883,with the brewery at Cedar St., easterly from and quite near Dale St. They were at 23 B St. in 1886. In 1889 Bartholomew was listed alone as a brewer at Ames cor. West Exchange St. His brother Owen had moved to Cranston. In 1889 the Keily Bros. were still listed at Cedar St. as well. However, Owen was back the next year. They were at West Exchange cor. Ames St. from 1890-91. They were at 524 West Exchange St. in 1892-93. They were at 505-524 West Exchange St. in 1894. They were back at 524 West Exchange St. in 1895. In 1895 Owen moved to Cranston again, this time for good. Bartholomew then established the Eagle Brewing Co. He was still listed at 455 West Exchange St. in 1898. He was president of the Eagle Brewing Co. until it closed in 1920.

Ferris, with a saloon at 110 and 112 School St. from 1894-95. He was listed as a bottler in 1897-99. He was listed in liquors in 1898. In 1920 he was listed as a contractor.

Holley Mineral Spring-
The Holley Mineral Spring was located in Woonsocket. It is two miles east of the city. Catherine M. Wilcox was the proprietor. In 1907 Stephen Wilcox was the proprietor. It was listed in a 1908 list of springs in Rhode Island, and was located in East Woonsocket. It was spelled Holly as well. The spring was first analyzed in 1883, and was being sold by 1894. It sent out a “report” in 1886. It was listed in 1893 as Holly Spring. For some reason it was never advertised in the state directories. In 1903-1922 Stephen Wilcox was running a spring water house at 374 Mendon Rd. In 1928, Catherine M. was listed as the widow of Stephen M. Wilcox. The Holley Mineral Spring Water Co. was first listed in 1932. Laura A. Mallioux was the owner. It was at 1088 Mendon Rd. from 1932-1980.

The Hope Club Beverages brand was created by the Puritan Beverage Co. It likely started in 1938. In 1925 the Maine Bottling Co. was manufacturing Hope Club Beverages. The Hope Club Beverage Co. was at 47 Burnside St. in 1940. Hugh Gasbarro, Anthony Tarro, and Walter Giannetti were the owners. It might have succeeded the Quaker Club Co. It was at 3 Murphy St. in 1942-45. Anguileno D'Iorio was the president and Walter Giannetti the treasurer and manager in 1943. Aquilino D'Iorio was the owner in 1945. Walter F. Giannetti was the owner in 1950. It was not listed in 1946, but in 1947 it had moved to 71 Spruce St. It was at 71 Spruce St. from 1947-1964. Anthony George was the owner in 1960. It was located in Providence until 1969, and moved to Cranston the next year. They bought out E.J. Dybala’s Soda Works in Cranston, at 275 Niantic Ave. They were in business there as late as 1990.

He was running a saloon at 140 Long Wharf in 1901. He was also at 66 W. Broadway from 1891-1913. He was also at 8 Duke St. in 1895. A W.H. Horgan was listed at the same address in 1914.

Walch was running the Pocasset Ice Co. at this location in 1900. Thomas was operating a bowling alley in 1902.

In 1875-1880 he was at 10 Planet St. The company became T.E. Hickey & Co. in 1880. Hickey & Pierce were at 10 Planet St. in 1881 (T.E. Hickey & Co. that year too). It was back to T.E. Hickey & Co. in 1882. In 1883-1891 he was at Planet St. cor. S. Main St. Alternative listings have the Hickey Bros. at 6 Planet St. from 1883-86. In 1889 he was selling mineral waters. He was at 6 Planet St. from 1892-1902. The Maine Spring Water Co. was also at this address in 1901-02.

Anton Hasselbaum (d. 1916) was a liquor dealer in Providence. He was listed as a coachman in 1888. In 1889 he ran a saloon at 36 South Main St. He was a teamster in 1895. He was listed as a bottler in 1896. He was listed as a bottler at 263 Canal St. in 1897. He was at 260 Dexter St. in 1898. He was at 33 Lorea St. and 260 Dexter St. in 1899, listed as a bottler. The company was called the A. Hasselbaum Co. at the time. He was at 260 Dexter St. from 1900-1915. In 1903 they were listed at wholesale dealers, importers, and bottlers of fine lager, ales, porters, wines, liquors etc. In 1909 Andrew F. Hasselbaum, Peter Schroder, and Ellen Dengan formed the A. Hasselbaum Co. They were importers, jobbers, and liquor dealers. A 1914 ad stated they were wholesale liquor dealers and bottlers of lagers, ale, porter, and wines etc. In 1916 the company was at the same address and was listed as a bottler. It became the A. Hasselbaum Co. Inc in 1916. Frank Cerini, Camillo Mancini, and Vincenzo Cerini were the partners. Anton died Fed. 1916. In 1919 the company might have been listed with 5 employees, no rating.

Charles D. Havens (1865-1931) ran the Havens Bottling Works in Westerly. His first location was 56 Canal St., where he offered fine wines and liquors. He was listed as a bottler in 1907. He was at 74 Pierce St. in 1909. He was at 56 Canal St. in 1913-17. He was listed in 1916-19 at 58 Canal St. In 1920 he was running a variety store at 58 Canal St. In 1922-25 the Havens Bottling Works was at 72 Pierce St. It appears to have succeeded the New England Bottling Works, which was run by Charles Havens. It was at 58 Canal St. and 72 Pierce St. in 1926-29. The Coca-Cola plant was also at this location in 1927-1938. George & Alfred Havens were the owners in 1939. They were bottling Orange Crush in 1936-1943. They bottled Pop-Cola in 1940-43. It was just at 58 Canal St. in 1930-1944. From 1930-1940 their plant was Industrial Ave. The New England bottling Co. was listed at the same location until 1937. In 1941 a fire in Westerly was near the bottling plant. C. Alfred Havens and Jennie R. Havens were the owners in 1942. It was at 54 Canal St. in 1948. C. Alf Havens was the proprietor in 1948. Only the plant on Industrial Dr. was listed from 1952-56. C. Alf was running the Havens Package Store at 58 Canal St. that during that time. It was not listed in 1957.

James S. Hazard (1843-1929) was a bottler in Newport and Westerly. He claims to have established his business in 1847. He was listed as working at Harvey’s Soda Works in 1863. He was at 14 Bath Rd. (Harvey & Co.) in 1867. Around 1867 he became an agent for George P. Harvey & Co. He had become J.S. Hazard & Co. by 1875, when George Harvey and Thomas Blackler became his partners. He moved to Westerly for a short time (ca. 1875-1877). He was at 75 Pierce St. at that location. He was advertising lemon and sarsaparilla soda water. He was listed in Newport in 1876. He moved back to Newport in 1877. He was at 14 Bath Rd. from 1877-1881. In 1882 he took George A. Hazard, likely his son as a partner. He was at 24 Bath Rd. Newport in 1884-1890. He was listed in Newport in 1889 as a bottler. James S. Hazard & Co. was listed in 1893-96. He left his business in 1897 to work for the H.N. Hassard Co.

The Hebe Co. was located in Providence, RI. It was founded by the Caproni Bros. Co. It was at 68 Brayton Ave. in 1916. That same year the Caproni Bros. were advertising Hebe Ginger Ale. In 1917 it was at 68 Brayton Ave. with the office at 175 Atwells Ave. They were incorporated in 1921. It was at 173 Atwells Ave. from 1922-25. They were selling ginger ale in 1922. They had a plant at 68 Brayton Ave. They were producing beverages and extracts in 1925. It was at 177 Atwells Ave. from 1920-1932. Raymond C.E. Caproni was the president, and Henry Caproni Jr. the secretary/treasurer. Raymond Caproni became the owner in 1933-34. It was back at 173 Atwells Ave. in 1933-34. The Newport Distributing Co. (bottlers) were at this address in 1935. In 1936-1944 it was back as the Hebe Beverage Co. Walter Giannetti was the owner in 1937-38. John DeCesare was the owner in 1939-1940. John was the owner and Anthony DeCesare the manager in 1942-43. It became the Clover Club Bottling Co. in 1945.

In 1897 Joseph was at 94 Foundry St. He was at 94 Foundry St. and 476 Broadway in 1899. In 1900-02 he was at 472 Broad St. and 94 Foundry St. He was running the New York Liquor Store in 1902. He was at 472 Broad St from 1901-06. He was at 456 Broad St. in 1909. In 1904-1911 he was at 472 Broad St. and 90 Foundry St.

George P. Harvey (1816-1896?) was a bottler in Providence and Newport. He was first listed in Newport in 1867. Geo. P. Harvey & Co. was in Newport in 1867-1872. He was at rear 14 Bath Rd. in 1867. James S. Hazard was his agent that year. Sometime around 1874 he began selling mineral water in Codd bottles. He was at 24 Peck St. Providence in 1876. He was at 22 and 24 Peck St. in 1877. He was at 315 Fountain St. Providence in 1878 manufacturing liquors and soda. He was succeeded by Ransford H. Harvey in 1879. He had a house in Norwich, CT, which proves he had ties to Irus W. Harvey and other Harvey bottlers in Norwich.

Ira Harvey (1807-1885) was a bottler in Providence. He was listed as a beer and soda manufacturer in 1847-48 at 1 Crawford St. His house was at 101 S. Main St. He was at 4 Dean St. in 1850. He was listed as a beer manufacturer in 1853-55 at cor. Union and Westminster Sts. (20 Union St.). He was listed in 1856-58.

John W. Harvey-
John W. Harvey was a bottler in Providence. He was partners with George Harvey. A “Harvey Perry” was listed as a liquor dealer at 66 Canal St. in 1849. In 1854 a Joseph Harvey was listed as a bottler. Joseph Harvey was Ransford Harvey's father. In 1856 Joseph & I.W. Harvey were listed as bottlers in Norwich, and Ransford was also listed separately as a bottler in Norwich.
John Harvey was mentioned in 1856-1858. His company J. Harvey & Co. was located at 65-1/2 Canal St.
James G. Harvey was dealing yeast with Ira in 1859-1863. James was Ira's son, so he is the most likely candidate.
This is an incredibly enigmatic company to research.  I have not been able to find a single reference to J. Harvey & Co. or the Canal St. address embossed on the bottles.  All I know for certain is that they were in business in and around 1857.

Ransford H. Harvey-
Ransford H. Harvey (1836-1907) was a bottler in Providence. He was listed as a clerk at 315 Fountain St. in 1878. He succeeded George P. Harvey in 1879. He was at 50 Washington St. cor. Union (the Albion), 8 Union St. (the Lotus), and 25 Fulton St. in 1880. He was at 315 Fountain St. from 1880-86. In 1882 he was advertising wines, brandies, gin, whiskey, and rum along with soda water, sarsaparilla, and cider. In 1887 he left the bottling business, which was taken over by Edwin J. Dean. In 1889 he had a house at 37 America St. Interestingly a R.H. Harvey was listed as a bottler at 292 Plainfield St. in 1905. He died Jan. 1907.

H.N. Hassard & Co. were bottlers in Newport. They were agents for the Hygeia Sparkling Distilled Water Co. and Simpson Springs. The manager in 1890 was Charles T. Smith. The salesroom was at 164 Bellevue Ave. They were at the same location in 1902. H.N. Hassard & Co. was first listed in the Newport directory in 1889. The Hassard Co. was first listed as a bottler of mineral waters in the 1893 RI Directory. The founder was likely Horace N. Hassard (1839-1927). An article from 1894 stated they were in business for 10 years. It was at 164 Bellevue Ave. from 1890-1901. Edward A. Hassard & Co. was listed as grocers in 1904. Horace was part of this company, but the Hassard Co. was not listed.

In 1889 James H. Hagan was a grocer at 517 Eddy St., Providence. He was at 331-333 Richmond St. from 1895-1902. He was also at 61 South St. in 1898. The company was called J.H. Hagan & Co. in 1896-97. In 1898 he formed the J.H. Hagan Co. His partners were Cornelius Minahan and Charles J. Christie. He was at 40-48 Peck St. and 46 to 48 Pine St. in 1899-1900. They were listed as importers, jobbers, and bottlers. He was at 40-48 Peck St. in 1901. Another listing has him at 333 Richmond St. in 1901. From 1901-1909 he was the treasurer of the Park Brewing Co. He was president of the Park Brewing Co. from 1910-1913. In 1914 he was treasurer of the Washington Co. In 1904-05 he was at 361 Canal St. and 333 Richmond St. (no Co). In 1908 he was also at 94 Plain St. At one time he was at 40-48 Peck St and 46 & 48 Pine St., listed as an importer, jobber, and bottler. He was advertising Harvard Brewing Co. ale. It appears the company was taken over by the Mt. Hope Distilling Co., which is listed in 1901 at the Peck St. address. By 1920 he had retired, and his residence was at 40 Carlisle St.

David G. Hall (1828-1883?) was a liquor dealer in Providence. In 1844 he was listed as a clerk at 41 Broad St., cor. Potter and Pine. He was listed as a clerk at 153 Broad St. (same location) in 1847-48. In 1852 he was listed as a soda manufacturer at rear 91 N. Main St. (the American House). He partnered with Edward Anthony in 1853 to form Hall & Anthony. They were at the Museum building and American House (77 N. Main St.). He was back at rear 91 N. Main St. in 1854 by himself. In 1855 he was listed as running a bottling establishment at rear 78 Pine St. at the City hotel. In 1857 he was at cor. Pine & Potter Sts. with no occupation listed. Ad from 1858. He was living at 7 Fountain St. in 1859. His house was at 5 Walnut St. in 1861. In 1862 he joined Greene & Co., liquor dealers. He was listed in Providence with no occupation until 1877, and had a house in Pawtuxet. (more at LRBC website)

The Hand Brewing Co. was located in Pawtucket, RI. Michael Hand Jr. was the president. He was part of the Hand Brewing Co. of Scranton, Pa., but withdrew himself from the company in 1899 to start a new business in Pawtucket, RI. His partner was Bernard Cabisius. It was first listed in 1898. In 1904 it was at Mendon Ave. near Central Ave. In 1906 it was on Freeman St. A 1906 factory inspection graded the company as very good with 56 employees.

Francis Gavin joined the company in 1907. Michael Hand Sr., who was also a partner in the company, but lived in Pennsylvania, died in 1911.  Michael Jr. died in 1915. A 1916 factory inspection graded the company as excellent with 63 employees. Francis Gavin left the company in 1916, but Mrs. Annie Hand continued to run it until 1925. The address in 1920 was 84 Mendon Ave. It was hit hard by the prohibition, but continued to sell near beer and soda.
It was at Mendon Ave & Freeman St. from 1898-1922. This location was near the India Point railroad. It was at 7 Freeman St. in 1929.

James Hanley Brewing Co.-
James Hanley (1841?-1912) established a brewery in Providence in 1861. It was located on Canal St. In 1876 he partnered with a Mr. Corney to form Corney & Hanley at Jackson, cor. Fountain St. They were also at 166 North Main St. from 1876-1880. It became James Hanley & Co. in 1879. They were at 28 Orange St. in 1880. They were at 32 Exchange Place from 1883-1892. In 1886 he founded the Rhode Island Brewing Co. In 1885, while still running the RI Brewing Co., he partnered with P.F. Hoye, becoming Hanley, Hoye & Co. Hoye formerly worked for Greene & Co. They were both immigrants from Ireland. This partnership was still intact in 1892. They were agents for J.H. Cutter whiskey in 1892. In 1895 the James Hanley Brewing Co. was incorporated.
They were at 35 Jackson St. from 1901-1922. Spencer H. Over was the general manager in 1913.
A 1906 factory inspection graded the company as very good with 74 employees.
