Edward A. Gavitt, Jr. (1864-19?) was a bottler in Narragansett Pier, RI. He was first listed in 1908. In 1911 he was a founding member of the Rhode Island Bottler’s Association. A 1912 factory inspection graded him as fair with 6 employees. In 1916 and 1918 factory inspections graded him as fair with 7 employees. In 1919 he was graded as good with 5 employees.  The 1920 factory inspection listed him as closed. However, he was on Narragansett Ave. from 1920-22. His latest known listing was 1925.

Geneva Springs Bottling Co.-

The Geneva Springs Bottling Co. was located in North Providence. It was at 33 Tiffany St. in 1928-1930 and 1939. It was at 72 Tiffany St. from 1932-1944. (It was only listed in the Providence directory in 1940). Carmelo Ando was the proprietor from 1928-1938. Gaetane Ando was the managaer in 1929-1938. Charles Ando was listed as the owner in 1939. Carmelo was the owner, and Charles Ando the manager in 1940. In 1942 it was listed as the estate of Carmelo Ando, with Joseph Ando as the manager and Esther S. Ando as executrix.

Gerardi Bros.-

The Gerardi Bros. were liquor dealers in Providence. In 1889 Frank S. Gerardi was a grocer at 114 Spruce St. In 1912 Frank was a running a restaurant at 185 Atwells Ave., and Antonio was a salesman for the American Bottling Co. In 1913 Antonio Gerardi, Francis Gerardi, and Michael A. Morris created the Gerardi Bros. Co. They were at 324 Dean St. They called themselves wholesale liquor dealers and bottlers of wines, beer, and mineral waters. The company went bankrupt in 1913, after owing large sums of money to the Mt. Hope Distilling Co. and the American Bottling Co. among others. In 1914 Frank was running a pool and bowling alley establishment, and Antonio was dealing in clothing.

German Seltzer Co.-

The German Seltzer Co. was located in Providence. It was at 7 Ticknor St. This was the same location as the B.F.H. Seltzer Co. The address 7 Ticknor St. was first used in 1917. I believe this was the original name of the company run by Bernard F. Hirsch.

Peter Germain Jr.-

Peter Germain Jr. was a liquor dealer in Central Falls, RI. In 1893 Peter Germain & Son were liquor dealers at 1 Sylvian St. In 1894 Peter Germain Sr. was proprietor of the Lincoln Hotel (486, 488 Broad St.), and had a saloon at 7 Sylvian St. That same year Peter Germain Jr. was manager of the Lincoln Hotel. In 1895 he was at 486 Broad St. and 7 Sylvian St. He was at 612 Broad St. in 1900-02. He was at 592 Dexter St. and 612 Broad St. in 1904. The City Hotel was first listed as dealing in liquors in 1904. He was the proprietor. He was at 488 Broad St. in 1909. He was at 490 Broad St. in 1905-1916. He was only at 488 Broad St. in 1920.

James W. Gaddis-

James W. Gaddis (1866-1927?) had a liquor license in 1880 in Arctic. Riverpoint in 1887-89. From about 1886-1893 he was part of the Gaddes Bros.  In 1890 he was listed as a retail liquor dealer, and also had a livery and trucking business. He might have been John’s brother. In 1891 James also had a tavern license. He was listed as a liquor dealer in 1891-98. He was listed as a bottler at School St. near Main St. (Arctic) in 1894.

John L. & Patrick Gannon / John L. Gannon Co.-

John L. Gannon (d. 1918) was listed at 315 Broadway as a clerk in 1889, with buildings at 120 Plainfield. He was listed as a liquor dealer at the same address in 1891-92. He was at 667 Broadway in 1893. He was listed as a bottler with his brother Patrick (died 1909) in 1897. They were at 5 Ellery St. from 1897-1914. In 1904 he was listed in Lymansville, a village in North Providence. He was at 5 Ellery St. from 1902-1922. In 1916 the company was John L. Gannon. He died in Feb. 1918. It was the J.L. Gannon Co. in 1919-1920. Maurice W. Dickens was running the company in 1919. Charles and Irving Dickens were running the company in 1920-21. It was incorporated in 1921 by Irving L. Dickens and Adolph Gorman. It had a capital of $150,000. They were bottling ginger ale in 1922.

Garneau Soda Works-

Joseph Garneau was a liquor dealer in Woonsocket. He was at 226 Clinton St. in 1895. He was at 326 Clinton St. in 1896-99. He was likely succeeded by William Garneau (1861-1934), who was at the same address in 1902-04. William was previously at 13 Social St. in 1897 and 3 Monument Sq. in 1899. He was at 81 Rathbun St. in 1905. He was at 81 Rathbun and 326 Clinton St. in 1906. He was just at 326 Clinton St. in 1907-1911. He was at 614 Clinton St. in 1912-19. By 1919 the business was known as the Garneau Soda Works. It was at 614 Clinton in 1920. Alternatively the address was 608 Clinton St. from 1919-1922. The company was bottling orangeade in 1922. In 1922 Charles Birenbaum and his sons, Louis M. and Simon, were the owners. In 1921-24 they were at 612 Clinton St. In 1924 Charles Birenbaum & Son were at this (608 & 612 Clinton St.) location. The UBB listes the Garneau Soda Works in 1927-28.

Antonio Gasbarro-

Antonio Gasbarro (1872-1937) was a liquor dealer in Providence. He was an Italian immigrant. He started a liquor business in 1898. He was located at 131 Knight St. In 1903, he moved the business down the road to 481 Atwells Ave. This area is known as Federal Hill. The second location was a more prominent location in the same neighborhood and this is where the store stood for 70 years. (excerpt from Gasbarro’s Liquors website)

Francis Gavin-

Francis Gavin was a liquor dealer in Pawtucket. He was running a variety store in 1901. In 1902-04 he was at 30 Waston St. in Central Falls. He was at 574 Dexter St. Pawtucket in 1902. He joined the Hand Brewing Co. in 1907. He was at 144 Mendon Ave. in 1920 (possibly retired).

Frank Bros./ Hyman Frank-

Hyman Frank was a liquor dealer in Providence. He was at 171-173 South Main St. in 1900-03. Not in liquor dealer list.

Hyman’s brother Samuel joined the business in 1904, and they became the Frank Bros. They were at 171 South Main St. in 1904-08. They were at 171-173 So. Main St. in 1906. In 1908 Hyman was still running the Frank Bros., but Samuel had no listed occupation. In 1909 they created the Mt. Hope Distilling Co. Samuel was the president and Hyman was the treasurer. In 1910 Samuel Frank created the Providence Wine Co. at 201-203 S. Main St. They were still running the Mt. Hope Distilling Co. in 1912. In 1921 Hyman was a charcoal dealer.

Harold V. French-

Harold V. French (1887-1970) was a bottler of mineral waters in Rumford, RI. In 1920 he was running a garage at 9 Cora Ave. in East Providence. In 1925 he was listed as a bottler in Rumford.  It is likely he was bottling mineral waters earlier than the stated date, I have just not found any records of it yet.

Elmer D. Full-

Elmer D. Full (1883-1949?) was a chemist in Providence. He called himself a “food & drug chemist”. He was at 112 Ring St. in 1910. He was listed as a chemist from 1910-1923. He was located at 48 Lauriston St. from 1919-25. His business was at 157 West Exchange St. from 1913-1923. He was bottling orangeade in 1922. He was just at the Lauriston St. address in 1924, but was still listed as a chemist. He was listed again at 48 Lauriston St. in 1934-35.

The Gaddes Bros. were bottlers in Riverpoint, RI. James W. Gaddis was the owner.  They were listed in 1886-87 as bottlers. Another directory lists them as hop manufacturers in 1887. They had a liquor license in 1889-1893. Spelled Gaddis. Not in 1898 taxes.

John Gaddis-

John Gaddis (1853-1891?) was a bottler in Arctic. He was listed as John Gaddes in 1888-89. He was listed as John Gaddis in 1890. In 1891 an ad placed him in Arctic (River Point). In 1892 he was advertising soda and mineral waters, as well as ale and beer. He was last listed in 1893.

Sodas Finck to Foster

George H. Finck-

George Finck was an emigration officer, bottler, and proprietor of the Rochester Hotel. His original name was Finckh. Finckh & Gerlach (Otto Gerlach) were grocers at 47 High St. in 1867. They were at 298 Broad St. in 1870-72. He had a lager beer saloon at 209 Broad St. in 1873-74. His house was at 243 Washington St. He partnered with Berhnard Hainbach in 1874. They were at 138 Pine St. George was also listed by himself at 333 High St. in 1876. The partnership ended in 1878. He was listed in 1880 at 138 Pine St., (location of the Rochester Hotel). The address changed to 138 Pine cor. Page in 1886. In 1889-90 he was listed as an emigration officer, bottler, and the proprietor of the Rochester Hotel, located at 138 Pine St. His house was at 76 Knight St. In 1891-92 Herbert J. Bruck was advertising himself as the proprietor of the Rochester Hotel and successor to George Finck. He moved to Santa Barbara, Ca in 1891.

George Finck had a short-lived partnership with Bernhard Hainbach. The company was at 138 Pine St., or the Rochester Hotel. They were only listed in 1875-78. In 1878 they were listed as bottling lager beer. Bernhard Hainbach was a kalsomine mfg. at 17 Callender St. in 1889.

James W. Finn was a liquor dealer in Pawtucket. A Martin Finn was at 104 Mineral Spring Ave. in 1879. A Joseph H. Finn was at 246 Mineral Spring Ave. in 1892-93. James was first listed in 1894. He was at 246 Mineral Spring Ave. from 1894-1919. He was at 43 Humboldt Ave. (his house) in 1920.

Five-O orange soda was bottled at Cocumcussoc Farm in Wickford, RI. G.F. Gallagher patented the bottle’s design ( D-pat 84,888) in 1931. Five-O was sold nationally including Chicago, where it might have originated.

Albert P. Foster & George H. Gilson were located in Johnston, RI. George was a liquor dealer in Lymansville in 1912. They were listed in Centerdale from 1913-16. A 1913 ad advertises their wine room. In 1919 they were on Putnam Ave. in Manton, RI. They were dealing in liquors. They were selling tonics in 1924-26. That year (1924) they were on Putnam Ave. opp. Centredale depot. In 1926 only Albert was listed.

Peter Faerber & Sons Co.-

Peter Faerber was a bottler in Newport. He was first listed in 1878. He was at Bulls Wharf. In 1884-87 he was at Bull’s Wharf, rear 197 Thames St. He was at 24 Bath Rd. Newport from 1901-1941. A 1912 factory inspection graded him as excellent with 15 employees. In 1913 the company was incorporated as Peter Faerber & Sons Co.  Augustus C. Faerber, Louis F. Faerber, and Annie E. Kuder were the partners. Their address was 224 Bath Rd. in 1922. In 1919 they were rated as very good with 7 employees.  In 1920 they were rated very good with 5 employees. Factory inspections in 1916 and 1921 graded the company as very good with 6 employees. They were bottling strawberry soda in 1922. Louis F. Faerber was the owner in 1927. In 1936-1943 they were bottling Orange Crush. The owners were Augustus and Louis F. Faerber. In 1930 they were at 480 Broadway. They were at 43 Bath Rd. in 1942-46. In 1947 they were at 43 Memorial Blvd. They were bought out by Coca-Cola in 1948

Stephen H. Farnham-

Stephen H. Farnham (1848-1918) was a bottler in Westerly. Originally he opened a pharmacy in Wickford in the 1870s. He started a bottling business in Westerly in 1888, and moved there in 1889. He was listed in Westerly from 1904-06. He was at 94 Canal St. in 1908-1912. An ad described him as a “Manufacturer of carbonated beverages, Nerve drink a specialty.” He was no longer listed in 1913.

Advertisement:

A specialty is made of "Nerve Drinks," and all orders are assured immediate and careful attention. Manufactures and puts up in the Patent Aetna Stopped Bottle (the easiest bottle in the market for families to use from) Sarsaparilla, Birch Beer, Nerve Drink, Ginger, Crab Apple Tonic, Orange Phosphate, Lemon and Raspberry soda.

Patrick Farrell (1881-1915?) was a liquor dealer in Pawtucket. A Michael Farrell was listed in 1883. Patrick was first mentioned in 1882. He was at 144 N. Main St. in 1884. He was dealing in liquors in 1890. He was at 144 North Main St. in 1887-1893. He was at 180 N. Main St. in 1893-97. He was listed as a grocer at 168 N. Main St. and had a saloon at 180 N. Main St. in 1894. He was also at 606 Dexter St. in Central Falls in 1901-02. He was at 180 N. Main St, in 1900-08. Harry J. Farrell was listed at 178 N. Main St. in 1909. His “estate” was listed as a liquor dealer at the same address (180 N. Main St.) in 1909-1916.

A Thomas Fenley was listed as a bottler in 1887-1890. He was at 3 Bridge St. in 1887. He was a loom fixer in 1894. He was not listed in 1895 liquors.

Eaton E. Ferrin was listed as a bottler in Providence. He was an auctioneer and furniture dealer in 1895. He had no listed occupation in 1897-98. In 1899 he was listed as a bottler at 79 Summer St. He married in 1900. In 1900-03 he was listed as a salesman. He was listed as an auctioneer from 1896-1909. He was a grocer at 1252 Elmwood Ave. in 1914. In 1919 he was at 32 Division St., no occupation listed

Joseph Engel & Son (Stewart) were bottlers in Newport. They were running the Carbonated Spring Water Co. in 1902-05. They also ran a bicycle shop. In 1910 a Julius Engel was listed as removed to Brooklyn, NY.

Enterprise Bottling Co.-

The Enterprise Bottling Co. was located in Providence. It was on Chalkstone Ave. It is not listed in any RI directories, so it was likely in business for less than a year. I strongly believe that this was a company created by Simon Levin or the Levin Bros., as they were located on the same road and this bottle has an identical style of embossing. No more proof yet.

The Esmond Bottling Works were located in Esmond, RI. It was first listed in 1929. Omer Sweeney was the owner. In 1930-36 Omer & Omer H. Sweeney were the owners. Omer E. Sweeney was the owner from 1937-1944. It was last listed in 1944. It became Manhattan Beverages.

Samuel J. Esten-

In 1859 Samuel J. Esten (1827-1900) bought the mineral water company of Isaac H. Penno. From 1847-1855 he was listed as a grocer with his father, Reuben W. Esten on Charles St. He was listed with no occupation at 152 S. Main St. in 1853. He was still listed as a grocer at 145 Charles St. with his brother (?) Willard in 1857-58. In 1859-1865 he was located at the rear of 95 North Main St. Jeremiah and Isaac Penno and his associates stayed in the company for a while, until Esten joined J. P. Eddy & Co. Samuel was just listed at his house at 14 Cady St. in 1867. In 1867 J.P. Eddy & Co. were listed as bottlers at the same address. Samuel probably left the bottling business around this time. J.P. Eddy & Co. was succeeded by Wallace W. Boynton by 1870.

In 1889 a Samuel J. Esten lived at 169 Charles St.

Eureka Bottling Works-

The Eureka Bottling Works was located in Woonsocket. It was at 46 Thomas St. in 1928-1930. Adelard Dault was the president, and Henry O. Tanguay the treasurer and manager in 1928-1930. Henry O. Tanguay was the president of the company. It became Martin's Soda Works in 1931. In 1931 Dybalas Spring Bottling Works was at this location.

The Eagle (Bottling Co.?) was located in Providence. The D.M. Brothers were the proprietors. This might have been Daniel Miller? Daniel Moulton? 1905.  I'm pretty stumped on this one!

The Eagle Brewing Co. was located in Providence. It succeeded the operation of Bartholomew Keily, who was the president of the company. It was at 503-534 West Exchange St. in 1895. It was at 455 W. Exchange St. cor. Ames from 1904-1920. Christopher Hutter was listed as a brewer here in 1904. A 1906 factory inspection graded the company as very good with 33 employees. In 1907 they were graded as very good with 35 employees. In 1908 they were rated very good with 37 employees. In 1909, 10, and 12 they were rated as  good with 33 employees. A 1916 factory inspection graded the company as very good with 35 employees. In 1919, 1920 they were rated as very good with 35 employees. A 1921 factory inspection listed the company as closed. Like many breweries, it was a victim of prohibition.

It operated from 1899-1920 at 455-475 West Exchange St.

Echo Spring-

The Echo Spring Bottling Co. was located in Bristol, RI. Moren & Sullivan took over T.M. Morris & Co. in 1931. They started bottling Echo spring water around the same time. Sullivan left the partnership in 1934, and Anthony Moren created the Echo Spring Bottling Co. It was listed in 1934 at 300 Thames St. In 1934-1950 Anthony A. Moren was the proprietor. It was now on Thames St. cor. Constitution St. It was on Constitution St. in 1940-1954. The company was not listed in 1955.

Empire Bottling Co.-

The Empire Bottling Co. was located in Cranston. It was at 129 Chestnut Hill Ave. in 1908-09. It was at 133 Chestnut Hill Ave. in 1910. It was incorporated in 1911. The founders were Vincenzo Lupoli, Pasquale Principe, and Walter Sepe. George Peloso was the manager in 1911. In 1911 a liquor license was granted to the Empire Bottling Co. of 133 Chestnut Hill Ave.

It was at 133 Chestnut Hill Ave. in 1911-13. In 1913 it was at 168 Farmington Ave. (cor. Dyer). It was at Dyer Ave. cor. Farmington in 1914-15. It was at 168 Dyer Ave. in 1920, dealing in wholesale liquors. It was at 168 Farmington Ave. in Arlington in 1916-1927. It was at the same address in 1933, I am not sure if it went out of business for a few years.

Empire Bottling Works-

The Empire Bottling Works were located in Bristol, RI. In 1929-1933 the company was at 155 Bradford St. In 1936-1954 it was at 43 Thompson Ave. Manuel DeAlmada and Daniel Quintal were the owners from 1929. M.S. Correa and M. Spinola were the owners in 1930-35. Antonio R. Borges was the owner in 1936-1940. Fortunado S. Borges was the president and Antonio the manager from 1940-45. It was not listed in 1963. They were back at rear 43 Thompson St. in 1965-69. They were at 41 Thompson Ave. in 1985. It is still in business today at 61 Buttonwood St.
