James E. Nolan-
James E. Nolan (1868-1924) was a
bottler in Providence. He partnered with a James P. McKenna from
1904-1911. James McKenna died in 1911, and James Nolan continued the
bottling business on his own. He was at 254 India St. from
1911-1922. He was bottling mineral waters. He was at 154 India St.
in 1922-25. He was bottling orangeade at the time. He was still at
254 India St. in 1923, address confusion? He died in May 1924. His
estate was listed as bottlers in 1927-1930. John J. Nolan & M.E.
Sullivan were the owners in 1925-1930. John was running the company
in 1930. In 1931 Bernard Smith was listed as a bottler at this
location.

The Nutro Beverage Co. was located in
Providence. Its headquarters were at 1486 Tremont St. Boston. They
had opened branch locations in Worcester and Providence by 1930.
They manufactured ginger ale. William H. McDonald was the president,
and Thomas Quirk was the general manager. It was at 181 Globe St. in
1930-32. It was not listed in 1922 or 1936. In 1936 they had a
location in Boston, Mass.

The Oates Bros. were liquor dealers in
Providence. In 1889 James Oates was running a saloon at 251 Branch
Ave. They were first listed as the Oates Bros. in 1890. They were
at 251 Branch Ave. They were at 428 Branch Ave. in 1891-93. They
were at 960 Branch Ave. in 1894. They were at 543 and 960 Branch
Ave. in 1895-98. Thomas Oates (1861-1901?) was also at 543 Branch
Ave. from 1895-98, dealing in liquors. Terence P. Oates was at 962
Branch Ave. from 1897-98, also dealing in liquors. In 1897 he was
one of the founding members of the Retail Liquor Dealer’s
Protective Association. By 1899 Terrence P. and Thomas Oates were
together at 964 Branch Ave., and had a liquor store at 960 Branch
Ave. Terrence was at 960 Branch Ave. in 1901, and Thomas was at 543
Branch Ave. the same year. They were at 555, 962 Branch Ave. in
1901-04. They were at 555 Branch Ave. in 1905-1915. Thomas died in
April 1914. Not listed in 1915. Terrence created the Douglas Ave.
Bottling Co. around 1905. Terrence was listed as a bottler at 1195
Douglas Ave. in 1920.

The Ochee Spring Water Co. was located
in Johnston, RI. The Ochee Mineral Spring was listed as early as
1886. Horatio N. Angell (1823-1896) was listed at 22 Peck St. as
owner of the Ochee Spring in 1890. The company’s office was at 22
Peck St. Providence from 1891-1902. In 1903 they offered their
spring water in “bottles, demijohns, or barrels”. Arthur? P.
Angell was the prop. It was at 21 Peck St. in 1903-07. It was
called Ochee Mineral and Medicinal Spring in 1905. It was at 14 Hay
St. from 1908-1916. The spring was at 745 Hartford Ave. Johnston in
1920-1930. The office was at 123 Sabin St. Providence in 1920-22.
They were bottling strawberry soda and ginger ale at the time. A.P.
Angell was the president in 1925-1939. They were at 775 Hartford
Ave. in 1932, advertising high grade ginger ale etc. They were at
745 Hartford Ave. in 1926-1936. They were at 757 Hartford Ave. from
1937-1942. Harry L. Steeves was the president and manager in
1940-43. In 1941-45 they were also located at 632 Thames St. in
Newport. In 1946 the Newport Beverage Co. and Virginia Dare
Beverages was at that location. They were at 775 Hartford Ave. in
1946-47. Frederick A. Young Jr. was the secretary and treasurer in
1947. 21 emp. They formed a partnership with Canada Dry in 1948. In
1953 they were listed as “doing business as Canada Dry Bottling Co.
(1890-1947) (1953)
