Domenic Proto (1919-1997?) was a
bottler in Bristol, RI. Proto & Son Bottling Co. was at 248 Wood
St. in 1929-1932. They were not listed in 1933-34 or 1936. They
were back at 248 Wood St. in 1935 and 1937-1938. Edward S. Proto
(1923-2000) was the proprietor at one time. In the 1930 Barrington
directory Domenic and a Nicholas Proto were at the 248 Wood St.
address and listed as employees of the NIR Co. They were not listed from 1939-1946. The company became the United Bottling Works in 1947. They sold Seacrest Beverages.

in Providence. In 1887 the company was at 54 Washington St.
Bradford Peck was the manager in 1887. James W. Quinn was listed as
a bottler at this location as well. In 1888-1892 the company was at
25 & 27 Peck St. They were listed as general bottlers with John
E. Good as the treasurer. He was the proprietor by 1889-1913. It
was at 25-31(33) Peck St. in 1892-95. It was at 39 Fountain St. in
1902-04. It was at 39-47 Fountain St. in 1896-1913. It was at 41-47
Fountain St. in 1914.

In 1892 the American Brewing Co. was
opened at 431 Harris Ave. In 1896 James Hanley became the company’s
president. He changed the name to the Providence Brewing Co. In
1897 it was still on Harris Ave. cor. Eagle St. bottling celebrated
lager.
The Woonsocket branch was first listed
in 1897. It was run by Jame M. Callen at 78 N. Main St. from
1897-98. James moved to Woonsocket in 1897. It was at 106 Main St.
in 1899. In 1901 the Woonsocket branch store was at 306 Main St.
They also had a branch in Boston. John E. Good was the company’s
treasurer in 1901. They had 55 employees at the time. It was still
at Harris Ave. and Eagle St. from 1904-1907.
A 1906 factory inspection graded the
company as very good with 37 employees.

The Puritan Beverage Co. was in
Providence. It was at 47 Burnside St. in 1938-1940. It succeeded
the Quaker Club Co. and McLaughlin Bottling Co. Julius Moskol was
the owner in 1938. This company has no relation to the Puritan
Bottling Co. It became the Hope Club Beverage Co. in 1940.

Puritan Bottling Co.-
The Puritan Bottling Co. was located in
Providence. It was at 365 N. Main St. in 1901-02. In 1903-04 it was
at 191 N. Main St. Phillip Cohen was the proprietor in 1901-04.
They were advertising tonics and Belfast ginger ale. They also dealt
in coal and wood. In 1905 George F. Holbrook was the proprietor.
That year he used a new type of cap on 50 cases of soda. In 1905-09
the Puritan Spring Bottling Co. was at 581 N. Main St. The Apollo
Water Co. was also at this address in 1906. In 1906-1910 the Murphy
Bros. (Joseph A. and Martin M.) were listed as bottlers (hop beer
mfg) at 34 Sheldon St., and the Puritan Bottling Co. was not
mentioned. In 1909 Clarence H. Carpenter II, Hollis J. Carpenter, and
Robert J. Herrick incorporated the Puritan Bottling Co. It was at 34
Sheldon St. in 1911-13. The Murphy Bros. were the proprietors.
